Deranged rainbows from space turn people into living works of art and force them to compete on television. Tilli's wish is granted when she joins their ranks and meets Felicite, a woman made of diamonds. Will their relationship survive the dark side of fame? Here we are, another book in the 2015 New Bizarro Author series. Rainbows Suck might be the most bizarre bizarro book I've yet read.Rainbows Suck, while on the surface is a bizarro love story between two living works of art, is really a book [...]

A cool concept, definitely bizarre, with ties to our current celebrity culture. The alien rainbows certainly do suck. It was a bit clunky and abrupt at times though, particularly in the transitions between scenes. Not bad, I just wasn't blown away when all was said and done.

A bizarro take on the culture of celebrity worship and reality TV. Wacky, surreal, mildly dizzying, and sort of—I dunno—British? At any rate, though the rainbows in this book do indeed suck, Rainbows Suck does indeed NOT suck. Think Alice in Wonderland (substitute vortexes for rabbit holes and sentient alien rainbows for walking playing cards) meets competition-style reality TV. A fun read. Indeed.

Tilli is just a plain, boring girl, whose life has hit rock bottom. With nothing to lose she decides to let sentient rainbows turn her into their Living Art Object. Living Art Objects compete for popularity the way contestants on a reality show compete; to stay alive and to stay in the game. Each time an Art Object does something outrageous or incredible, it ups the stakes. If you do not outperform your rivals you self destruct. At first the life is glamorous, albeit humiliating and terrifying. T [...]

I really really really enjoyed this book and wish I could give it five stars but I just can't. Here's why: Pros:-So bizarre and amazing (obviously because it is from the New Bizarro Author Series from Eraserhead Press) -I loved the underlining meanings that this seemingly bizarre book contains--the way fame can suck your soul out, the disparity between celebraties and "regular" people. How this disparity effects everyone involved (especially in regards to mob/crowd mentality). How celebs feel th [...]

Rainbows Suck – Madeleine Swann“Oooooh, Fashion! We are the goon squad and we're coming to town. Beep-beep!” So sang David Bowie on Scary Monsters in 1980. I don't know whether Madeleine listened to this whilst writing her novella, Rainbows Suck, but I'd like to imagine so.Tilli, a poor and almost destitute artist, is picked by an overlord group of sentient rainbows from outerspace to become a living piece of art. As she struggles to gain recognition as an art exhibit (exhibits which fail [...]

Bizarro is a genre that allows for my favorite kind of social commentary: on-the-nose. Rainbows Suck by Madeleine Swan represents the strength of the genre: it manages to be funny and thought-provoking in a well, isn’t it obvious what it’s all about kind of way, and in so doing, delivers the sharpest kind of critique of social media, celebrity, and western civilization’s obsession with both. It’s about a lot of other things, too, including the meaning of art, the self-destructive nature o [...]

A startling long-form Bizarro debut from a talent who is definitely going places. This book is truly weird. If you aren't into that -- that's fine, I'm not going to judge you (out loud). But this really is a surprising tale, complete with space rainbows, that turns a lot of accepted genres conventions on their heads and repurposes them as brain ticklers. If you like Guy Maddin, The Mighy Boosh, old skool Rainbow Brite, and snorting lines of finally chopped pigments from Leonora Carrington painti [...]
