I'm not sure why, but every time I pick up a Biblical fiction book I somehow expect that I am going to be heading into a slower-paced read. But such is not the case with "On This Foundation" which I honestly found to be so completely absorbing that I read the entire thing in one day (including late into the evening of course!) Lynn Austin has skillfully woven together the story of Nehemiah with a number of supporting characters to create a spell-binding tale that has given me a new appreciation [...]

If you've been reading my reviews for a while now, you've probably noticed that I have my "favorite" authors I come back to time and again. Lynn Austin is definitely one of those--but at the same time, I've never been as much of a fan of her Biblical fiction as I have been with her other historical novels. That being said, I still wanted to read this book, and while it's not one my favorites of her books, I did think it was worth the read. Halfway through On This Foundation I even stopped for a m [...]

Austin has always impressed me with her attention to detail and her careful study of historical settings, so I knew my first venture into the Biblical fiction field would be a safe one with her as my guide, and I was not disappointed.I’ve studied Nehemiah several times, so I was familiar with the story. But the stories within the story kept it feeling like a fictional novel and were very entertaining. But I think what shined the most were the lessons on glorifying God, restoring a right relatio [...]

So enjoyed this final book of the trilogy!!

Loved this book! One of my first series on historical fiction. I was delighted there were 3 book sin this series because I couldn't stop reading it. She has a great pace and it was never boring. It kept going from one thing to the next. I loved her character development and the accuracy that followed the Bible. A new author that I love!

I have never read a Lynn Austin book that I didn't like. This series made Bible stories come alive and I really enjoyed it.

  • Carissa

I nearly rated this book 3 stars, but in good conscience I couldn't do it. A lot of effort goes into creating biblical fiction, and I liked almost all of the characters that Lynn Austin created. I think she took a little to much liberty with Nehemiah himself, heaping doubts and fears and emotions on him that I don't see in Scripture, but this is fiction and a little alteration is to be expected.I started out disliking Chana, but ended up admiring her fortitude and how she matured from a stubborn [...]

This has to rank at the top of my list of favorite book seriesI will possibly read this series again. It made the Old Testament come alive. We serve a faithful God and a God that loves us dearly!

Ever since his parents’ murder, Nehemiah has been obsessed with safety—safety for his brothers, safety for his people, and safety for the king he guards. Now, he has discovered that his brothers and their friends and families are not safe because there are no walls around the city in which they live. One man was robbed and murdered in the middle of the night because there were no gates to keep the criminals out. Disturbed, Nehemiah follows God’s leading and providence to rebuild those wall [...]

When it comes to a novel written by Lynn Austin, it takes about three paragraphs to completely hook into the story. I have read all of her novels and have yet to find one I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. The third in The Restoration Chronicles, On This Foundation, might be my favorite of the series! Although I’ll probably re-read them all just to make sure.“When the Almighty One gives us a job to do, we can expect two things: both strength and wisdom from God and opposition from His enemies. Be [...]

On This Foundation***** book 3 The Restoration Chronicles by Lynn AustinI have read many Biblical fiction books over the years, but On This Foundation is my favorite. Lynn Austin has written a fantastic story of the rebuilding of the Jerusalem wall in such a way that is very realistic. Not much is known of the main character, Nehemiah, other than he was the cupbearer to the King of Persia. But she has beautifully woven a story of his burning desire—a calling of God—to leave Persia, go to Jer [...]

I knew the story of Nehemiah from the bible, where he worked for the King of Persia, who noticed that Nehemiah was unhappy and he asked why. When Nehemiah told him he was upset about the destruction of the walls around Jerusalem, his home town, leaving it defenseless - the King gives him permission to go home and rebuild the walls - providing a guard and materials, and making him the governor. What I didn't know was the background on Nehemiah and his brothers that led him to work for the King.Th [...]

The Biblical story of Nehemiah is brought to life in a vivid and fascinating way. The characters are well developed and I enjoyed being a part of their lives for a brief time.

On This Foundation, the third and concluding novel in Lynn Austin’s Restoration Chronicles, has been on my shelf way too long. I read the first two books, Return to Me and Keepers of The Covenant, in quick succession. Why, oh why, did I wait so long to read this wonderful novel? I can only plead ignorance — ignorance to how great this thoroughly researched and beautifully constructed book is. I expect writing Biblical fiction can be a daunting task, but Austin makes it look effortless. From [...]

Another Great ReadThis final book in The Restoration Chronicles by Lynn Austin tells the story of the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls in the era of Nehemiah and Ezra. Lynn Austin enfleshes the Biblical characters making them live again in the minds of the readers. She simultaneously challenges readers to examine their own faith in the light of the faith of these men of God from a bygone era. This series is well worth reading.

My favorite thing about Lynn Austin’s series of books is that it causes me to read the Old Testament with greater intent. This final book in the series was about Nehemiah. With God’s help he was able to overcome his enemies and huge obstacles-like pride and he was able to unite the people and reconstruct the wall around Jerusalem in less than 2 months. A book that strengthens faith should get 5 stars in my opinion!

  • Trish

I enjoyed the story, but I did find this one was a bit more difficult to get into than the two previous novels. I also didn't love the way Nehemiah's backstory was embellished (hopefully readers will compare the novel with the Biblical account to see what details are accurate) but it did succeed in making me more aware of how difficult the time of rebuilding was. I also loved the way the author brought the times of worship at the temple, and recitations of the Psalms, to life.

Lynn Austin is such an amazing writer! I love ALL her books, and this one doesn't fail! I love how she weaves everything together. Love the different points of view. I can't wait for her new book to come out!

  • Emily

This book was really good. I forgot how much I like Lynn Austin's books. It was very well researched. I will have to read the other books in the series.

Reviewed series under first of the series.

Lynn Austin remains one of my favorite inspiration authors. Her biblical novels are very well done. This was the third in a series. She's a Michigander as well!

Stone by StoneSpare narrative and a stoic reporting of the facts — this is the tone of the Old Testament book of Nehemiah:“So I came to Jerusalem . . .” (Five words about a dangerous two-month, one-thousand-mile journey.) “I wept and mourned for many days.” (Three months!)Based on a careful study of Scripture, Lynn Austin puts meat on the bones without obscuring the truth or compromising biblical fidelity. On This Foundation, book three of The Restoration Chronicles, is a fictionalized [...]

I recommend this book highly. Please see my reviews of Return to Me. This is an author I plan to read often. I enjoy her style. I believe she researched deeply and truly.

Nehemiah is the cupbearer to the king of Persia, but he is heartbroken that his people live in a city of broken-down walls. When he receives permission from the throne to rebuild the capital city of Jerusalem, he returns to his homeland, but he finds opposition waiting for him. Will he survive long enough to complete his God-given task? As a history major, it shouldn’t be a surprise that I love historical fiction. I also love the Bible. When those two things intersect, it is too much for me to [...]

This book, and in fact the whole Restoration Chronicles series, is a fabulous example of Biblical fiction at its finest. If you haven’t read the other titles in this series yet, you may want to check out my reviews of Return to Me and Keepers of the Covenant as well.On This Foundation tells the story of the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s wall in the time of Nehemiah. As with the first two books in the series, this one focuses on a handful of viewpoints – some prominent historical characters and [...]

If anyone deserves to be the hero of a book, it's Nehemiah. His courage and leadership skills are outstanding in the Bible, and this story starts before his days as the Persian king's cup bearer. I'm glad Lynn Austin began with a traumatic event from his childhood. It sets the scene for his close-knit relationship with his two younger brothers, not to mention why security is his calling and passion. It set me up to want to back Nehemiah all the way. It's fun to read how the reasonably young gover [...]

There is much to be said about being totally wrapped up in a story when you know how it ends. That’s what caught me laughing at myself when I couldn’t put On This Foundation down. Especially since the book is cast long, long ago and traces multiple storylines to take in and keep track of.I’ve always wanted to better understand what life must have been like when the crumbled Jerusalem wall was being rebuilt under Nehemiah. So it was no surprise I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. What I [...]
